Deputy PM Demeke Hails Urban Development

Deputy Prime Minister Demeke Mekonnen greeted development and good governance activities in urban areas of Ethiopia.

Addressing the 5th Ethiopian Cities Week in Bahirdar, the Deputy Prime Minister said Ethiopian cities are undergoing progress in the areas of development and good governance.

Ethiopian cities are currently becoming a center of service, industry, trade and technology transfer as they managed to seize the enabling opportunities intended for them.

The ongoing activities in urban areas of the country need to be strengthened, Demeke said.

All stakeholders have to do their part for the success of Ethiopia's ambition to join the middle income economies by attaining the strategic plan set in urban development and industry sectors.

Urban Development, Housing and Construction Minister, Mekuria Haile told the day millions of job opportunities have been supplied through micro and small enterprises mushrooming in cities and towns across the country.

According to Mekuria, last year alone more than 2 million citizens got jobs. Some 2.7 billion birr loan was provided for the enterprises to function as well as they can. The enterprises deposited 3.4 billion birr.

The over 190 cities taking part at the event are displaying the growth they have undergone and the attraction they have.
