Underground Construction Terms
Underground Constructions
Due to the different functions the underground construction have to be divided in the following constructions:
The tunnels are mainly underground constructions for transportation (railway, road, etc.)
The galleries serve for transportation of gas or fluids, for cable tracks and for temporary or permanent access.
Caverns are for the storage of gas, oil and other fluids or solids, for the installation of power plants, parking, shelters, etc.
Shafts are underground works to overcome the differences of elevations (vertical or steep inclined).
Construction methods
The construction method includes all technical and organization devices to fulfill the work. On underground work this includes mainly the excavation and the support work.
Tunneldrive-methods
Know how to perform the excavation works (e.g TBM – tunnel boring machine, roadheader, drilling and blasting)
Excavation method
Method to divide the cross section in different parts (smaller excavation sections in smooth rock or in presence of water)
Rock Classification
Due to the different geological conditions the drive is classified to fix the measures to be taken during the excavation and the measurement of the support work.
Typical Sections
The typical section shows the shape, the thickness of the lining and most of the installations of the tunnel.
