About Gibe III Hydroelectric
The Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (EEPCo), which is totally government owned autonomous agency and administered by a Management Board, is the project executing institution for Gibe III Hydroelectric Project.
EEPCo is responsible for the allocation of funds and for the follow up of other projects initiated as a result of the construction of Gibe III Hydroelectric Project. The Gibe III Hydroelectric Project Office is EEPCo¡¯s representative for the implementation of the Project. On completion of the construction works and commissioning, EEPCo shall take over the Power Plant and operate it within its system.
The Project objective is to enhance the hydropower generation capacity of the country through developing a plant with a capacity of 1870 MW. It has also the aim of ensuring exportation of power through regional interconnection Transmission system. Besides supporting the country¡¯s Universal Electrification Access Program, the country will be benefited by earning foreign currency through sells of electricity to neighbouring countries. The installed capacity of the plant is 1870 MW with an annual energy production of 6,500 GWh. This will increase the present 800 MW installed capacity by 234%.
